NEW RULES ON KEEPING BIRDS
Do you keep poultry on your allotment? Even only one or a couple? If more than 50, you must register with DEFRA. If less than 50, you can voluntarily register..New rules are being introduced to help protect the poultry industry from bird flu. Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) has confirmed that the threshold for mandatory registration on the GB Poultry Register will be reduced from 50 birds to ONE, and all poultry keepers will need to review their entry every year. The deadline is 1 Oct 2024. |

TAGA UPDATE
Dear Members
The Arnfield Cabin is now open Saturday and Sunday (until October 2025) – 10 am to 1 pm, selling garden supplies, hen and dog food, compost, and plants when available. Follow us on Facebook.
- We have been making some improvements to the seating in the Arnfield Cabin and welcome you, your friends and family for refreshments and a place to catch up and exchange your gardening tips.
- The 12th Anniversary Fruit Flower and Vegetable Show will be held on Saturday 13 September 2025, opening at 1pm. Afternoon Tea will be served.
- Many of our members haven’t yet picked up this year’s membership cards. They are waiting for you at the Cabin. A chance to pay for your membership if you haven’t got round to it yet. We are very reliant on people paying their membership fees to continue to cover the costs of insurance and some of the essential maintenance jobs.
- The bi-annual Parish Council inspection of allotments will take place in September 2025. We encourage all our members, especially those with TAGA plots, to tidy up and make their plots as good as they can. We’d like to think that TAGA members can be the example for all plot holders! By the way, please remember you are also responsible for keeping the perimeter of your plot free of weeds, the grass cut, and overhanging branches cut back. The Parish Council have revised the Terms & Conditions for their Allotments and a copy was sent to to each tenant with the annual rent request. Please read these carefully as they include some important changes e.g. a requirement to cultivate a minimum of 30% (national standard is 75%) of the allotment and to obtain permission to keep bees with stringent bee keeping requirements including appropriate insurance and location of hives.
- Our Website Editor Allan Dyer continues to work on improvements to our website - www.taga-tintwistle.co.uk. Take a look and let him know if you would like to see anything else on their which would be useful.
- Weekly get togethers for a brew and a cake are ever popular and of course Bacon Butty Sunday.
- For all other events, please check our TAGA Facebook page and the website for confirmation.
- Each year we put in a bulk order for Kings Seeds. They are high quality seeds and plants, and we get them at a reduced price because we are a member of the National Allotment Association. Kings Seeds catalogues are available to borrow from the Arnfield cabin and the order goes to Kings in mid-September.
- Our summer hanging baskets were exceptionally successful this year. Huge thanks to Steve Barnes and Paula Lord for all their hard work. Steve is planning to get plants for autumn hanging baskets which we should be able to sell from mid-September. As in previous years, we are also hoping to bulk buy spring bulbs which will be available in November.
- Finally, we need to recruit some more members who would like to be involved in the running of the Cabin, running our social events, or helping with maintenance jobs on the site. The same team has been doing these tasks for several years now and we would love some new faces to join us – if only so we can have the odd weekend off!! You don’t have to be available every weekend, every now and again would be wonderful! Just talk to Marianne and she can let you know what is involved.
Happy gardening everyone!
With best wishes from your TAGA Committee
